Make Your Own Website For Free

It is easier than you think to make your own website for free. There is no need to pay someone else hundreds or even thousands of dollars when you can make your own website.

It is simply amazing how many people try to build an online business using a cheap cookie cutter site or some free promotional website they picked up somewhere on the net. Some people even believe they will make a lot of money with a USD 1 website they bought on eBay...

As we have already explained in Free Website - Facts and Myths as well as in Free Web Hosting - Facts and Myths, there are many disadvantages in building your online business on a weak foundation or quicksand.  

Remember, when you make your own website for free you don't only save a lot of money, you have the satisfaction of doing it yourself and getting it to look and feel exactly the way you want it to.

As far as I am concerned, there are only two reasons why you would not want to make your own website for free. They are:

⇒ You think it is too difficult to make your own website for free, or
⇒ You are too lazy to make your own website for free.

If you are simply too lazy, I cannot help you. Nobody can. Maybe you should try one of those get-rich-quick schemes being offered everywhere on the internet. They do not work but, hey, maybe you are lucky.

Building a profitable online business is hard work. Sorry, I am not going to lie to you. The fact that up to 98% of all online marketers fail to make any money is proof enough.

Before we start, let's first address a popular myth:

Myth: You must first know HTML to make your own website for free.

Wrong. First of all, HTML stands for 'Hypertext Markup Language'. It is the "language" used for creating web pages. HTML is actually not difficult at all to learn although it is not necessary to know HTML.  

By the way, I am typing this page as if I am typing a normal article. I am not typing it in HTML. The only HTML code I have used on this page was to include the above arrow signs (⇒). The code is so easy and you will agree with me that it is not even really necessary to include arrow signs.

O.K. I have your attention. How can you make your own website for free?

I am using a very simple program, called NVU. You can download it for free from their website. Those of you that know me will know that I hardly ever recommend using free services. I can honestly say NVU is an exception to this rule. They are great. If they were not I certainly would not use them.

Simply download NVU to your desktop. Open the program and type your content, like what I am doing, and save it in a file of your choice. Use the .html extension. E.g. If your file name is "abc" then save it as "abc.html". 
P.S. You can use .html or .htm - There is no difference between them.

Once you have finished your web page you can upload it to your host or service provider. Once again, it is an easy process but I cannot explain it here as most hosting companies have there own requirements and will give you detailed instructions anyway.

Using NVU is an easy way to make your own website for free. Take your time to go through their support manual, experiment a bit and you will soon be able to build great web pages. 

Note: You need to register your own domain name. However, first read our web page on domain name registration before you run of and register just any domain name.

As far as hosting service providers are concerned, I can recommend using Godaddy or Hostgator. They are both very good and will only cost you a couple of dollars per month.

Another method you can use to make your own website for free is to use a 'block builder' or 'site builder' program. Many companies offer these type of programs, including Godaddy and Hostgator.
 

For example, Godaddy's site builder program is called 'Website Tonight' and for as little as USD 4.99 per month you can make your own website. The price includes hosting and there is no need to upload your site. You can publish it on the net with the push of one button. In addition, you can choose from a wide variety of free website templates and buy a domain name from only USD 1.99 pa. with your 'Website Tonight' package.

The best way to illustrate the difference between the above-mentioned two options is to refer to Sitesell (This site is powered by Sitesell) - They compare the 'block builder' method to cycling with trainer wheels. Nothing wrong with it and a good way to learn. When you are ready (there is no rush) you can remove the trainer wheels and graduate to using a HTML editor or WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) service.
