The first point I always indicate in my small business plan sample is a home business review question, namely: Why do you want to make money online from home?

There are literally millions of web pages on the internet and advertisements in magazines that make it seem so easy to start your own home based sales business. It nearly seems that everybody will make a lot of money and that success is just about guaranteed. Unfortunately this is not reality.

You must be sure why you want to start your own home based business and must be aware of all the positive and negative aspects associated with an online business.

Having your own business is not a walk in the park...

Remember when doing your home business review that for as long as you run a one-man-show there will be no income when you cannot manage the business. What do you do when you go away on holiday or when you are too sick to work? Can you survive without a regular monthly paycheck? If yes, then for how long?

Many people are under the illusion that it is easy to run a home based business. The reality is that most people work a lot harder when they start their own business than what they worked being an employee of a company. Most employees can count on a steady paycheck at the end of the month!

Depending on cash flow constraints a business owner may not be able to pay himself a salary every month after he has taken care of all his business expenses. This is especially relevant in a new home based business.

O.K. Enough about the dark side. Your home business review should not be done to discourage you. Use it to evaluate your reasons for wanting your own home based business. Remember to be completely honest with yourself.

I find that by considering all the negative and positive aspects in your home business review you will less likely be discouraged when things don't always go according to plan. By the way, things very often don't go according to plan.

If you only picture your home based business as an easy way to make money you may give up just as easily at the first signs of trouble. However, if you do have difficult days it often helps to remind yourself that you have anticipated there will be good days and difficult days. It becomes a problem only if you never considered the fact that not every day will be great.

A home based business can be fantastic

There are few things as satisfying as starting your own online business and working hard to make it grow. Yes, it is not easy but it is very rewarding. It is true that most businesses do not succeed but it is also true that most American millionaires are business owners and not employees.

Working as an employee may give you a sense of security. However, it is often a false sense of security. As a business owner you have the opportunity to make changes in your business and make things happen. As an employee you are often only left to the mercy of the company as far as your job security is concerned.

I guess the most rewarding aspect for me of being a business owner is FREEDOM. The freedom to determine what I do, how I do it and when I do it. The freedom of not getting into trouble with a boss if I am five minutes late for work.

The freedom of not having to justify every decision to a boss. The freedom of making decisions and not having to wait for someone else to make a decision. The freedom to reward myself for good results and not having to beg an ungrateful boss for a salary increase that I know I deserve. The freedom of knowing that my hard work will be rewarded.

Anyway, that is as far as I am concerned. What about you?

Draw up your own list of pro's and con's. The more convinced you are that you want to start your own home based business, after considering all the pro's and con's in your home business review, the greater chances are that you will succeed and not allow bad days to discourage you.

There are few things as bad as when you start doubting yourself and your motives for wanting to make money working online.

Bottom line? Use a home business review to evaluate your motives for wanting your own business. It is the first step in your small business plan sample. You are not going to become an overnight money maker millionaire. However, if it is freedom you are after, what are you waiting for?
